1853 – Tickle Bridge
August 31, 2023Troubles aside, the bridge was eventually completed, and the board of commissioners remained active. In November 1853 new appointments to the board included Peyton, along with William Stirling, Charles Edmonds, John Meadus and John Colbourne. Shoal Tickle Bridge was repaired or replaced a number of times over the years, including 1907 and 1927. The latter project is mentioned in the published journal of John Froude, a local master mariner who worked on the concrete structure from July to August of that year. During construction a telephone line was put out of service, leading the local telephone company to bill the Highroads Commission for the cost of labour in putting the line back in service.
