A brotherhood and community space — in one building

The Masonic Lodge in Twillingate was established on February 9, 1889, during a meeting at the town’s court house. The lodge’s membership mainly consisted of elite members of the community, including professionals and businessmen. Despite facing financial setbacks from the 1894 bank crash, the lodge persevered. In 1905, they purchased a property owned by Thomas Every for $250. While initially considering converting Every’s house, they eventually decided to construct a new lodge building.

Construction, led by Josiah Roberts, began in 1906 and cost slightly over $3,100, covering materials, labor, and land expenses. The dedication ceremony, originally planned for October 1906, was delayed until July 1907 due to weather and transportation issues. Delegates, including Hon. J. A. Clift, arrived for the event. The building’s cornerstone, containing a time capsule, was laid, followed by festivities, including a social and a ball at the court house.

The Masonic Lodge has remained an active part of Twillingate’s community for over a century. Its temple, a Registered Heritage Structure since April 1998, stands out as a local architectural gem. Adorned with Masonic symbols and pilasters, the lodge boasts intricate exterior details. Arched windows crown the upper levels, while triangular pediments grace the lower windows. The building features an offset tower, reminiscent of a church, with an egg-shaped dome atop it.
